In order to use electricity produced by photovoltaics and some wind systems in the household it needs to be transformed directly after it has been generated. The inverter is a device which transforms direct current into alternating current and renders it applicable for local electricity consumption. It also regulates the optimal network integration into the power grid.

Electricity self supply

Remuneration for self supply

On-site consumption of electricity generated by systems which were commissioned between January 1st, 2009 and March 31st, 2012 is remunerated. A transitional arrangement extends this remuneration to certain systems commissioned before June 30th, 2012. On-site consumption of electricity generated by systems commissioned before or after this period is not remunerated. On-site consumption was supposed to be promoted with this regulation, in order to make it more attractive. The advantages of on-site consumption do not need to be advertised any longer. Considering the normal prices for electricity which the network operator sells as 20cent/ kWh, it is worth using the generated electricity on-site and to avoid paying the constantly rising prices of the network operator.

Legal provisions for on-site consumption

Since April 1st, 2012 (transitional agreement to June 30th, 2012) electricity consummated on-site has not been remunerated any more. On-site consumption is, however, still possible. The only condition is that own-produced electricity does not make use of the public network. This way it is possible for a third party, who lives reasonably close, to consummate the own-produced electricity “on-site”. The condition here is also that the electricity does not make use of the public network. If it is, however, fed into the public network, strict regulations by the EEG (German Renewable Energy Act) have to be considered. For further information please refer to the EEG Clearing Agency.

Tax regulations with on-site consumption

For tax concerns a system operator is a businessman. Sales taxes are charged. Sales taxes are also charged for on-site consumption as the system operator legally feeds electricity into the public network and the purchases power from the public network again. On-Site consumption is fiscally registered as return and treated as such. Isolated systems are excluded from this regulation. Please consult your tax advisor for more detailed information.  

Technical equipment to optimize on-site consumption

Since April 1st, 2012 self-consumption has not been remunerated any more. On-site consumption by the system operator and also by a third party, living close to the system is possible under the condition that the electricity is not fed into the public network. On-site consumption has become much more interesting compared to the feed-in remuneration, also due to the optimization of technologies. Surplus electricity which is left after on-site consumption and fed into the public network is still remunerated.

The meter to measure own consumption supervised exactly how much electricity was consummated on-site. Usually a bidirectional meter is fixed at the legal grid connection. It supervised the electicity consumption and current course and renders it transparent for the consumer. These measures are recommended for small systems up to 10 kWP nominal capacity or for systems which require such a measure due to fiscal regulations. Systems with 10 kWP to 1000 kWP nominal capacity require an additional generation meter, as these systems have restrictions by the market regulation model which provides for 90% remuneration of the fed in energy

Solar batteries are indispensable within a modern and efficient system. These can boost the on-site consumption enormously by storing electricity if it is not completely consummated the moment it is generated, and by distributing it at times when not enough electricity is generated in order to cover the required amount of energy. Only when the battery is empty electricity from the public network operator is needed.
