The collectors of a solar heat system are usually mounted on the roof of a building. A dark metal absorber is attached under the glass surface and transforms solar radiation into warmth. A heat transfer fluid, usually a mix of glycol and water, circulates in a copper pipe system which is on the back-side of the collectors. The fluid can resist temperature changes between -23°C and 150°C (-9.4°F – 65,6°F).
Solar heat can be recommended for households with an annual water consumption from 50 cubic meters onwards. Solar heat can be integrated into the existing heat cycle. The efficiency of solar heat can be increased to an important extent if the dimensioning and size of the system are adapted to the actual heat requirements.

About 60% of the thermal energy in a household can be covered with sola heat, when the system is dimensioned and planned optimally. Depending on the amount of thermal energy which is used to support the heating system, the coverage can be lower. Photovoltaics increasingly offer a good supplement for thermal solutions, as electric energy generated with a PV system has a secondary use: heating elements, for example, can additionally conduct thermal energy into the heat cycle and maximize the self-consumption of home produced energy. Vacuum tube collectors generate heat in vacuum tubes. The heat distribution pipes and the absorbing layer are built into these, which enables the heat to be isolated better. Higher efficiency is the consequence. This is why the vacuum tube collector is very popular if there is not much space on the roof or if a high coverage rate is needed.
